For over a dozen years, my interconnectedness to Nature was expressed in representational oil paintings of regional New York State landscapes and colored pencil still life drawings of natural objects evocative of old master mood and atmosphere.
The confluence of several personal experiences has given rise to a completely new body of art work. The most notable catalyst was deep tissue massage therapy which awakened the memory of my birth. This opened the door to an exploration of the role of women as life bearers. Through a series of oil paintings, I am exploring the concept of woman as vessel.
Eggs have been chosen as a symbol, for their obvious connotation as a fertile vessel and for their remarkably beautiful, simple shape. Nests are included, acting as vessels in their own right, providing safe havens.
I paint directly from still life setups in my studio from a collection of eggs and bird nests. Quite often, I become the builder, using found materials to fashion the form of a nest.
These paintings are an outward expression of my inward journey toward my true feminine nature. I have found guidance from a wholistic counselor, writings on feminine spirituality and the practice of yoga. I have caught glimpses of divine presence and know that all is connected. My excitement comes where brush meets canvas, where trust and guidance allow the universal to speak.
