Heartwings says, “It is best to sing a lullaby when
we put the past to rest.”
It was time to make my favorite salad dressing. I took my collection of personal
recipes from the shelf and opened it. There it was, scribbled in pencil on a
scrap of paper, “Christine’s Maple Vinaigrette.” As I took
the ingredients for it from the cupboard I thought about my friend and smiled.
I have not heard from her since she married and moved away. This was several
years ago, yet I think of her each time I make her dressing. She has gone on
to a new life and I hope she is happy and well. As I was searched for this recipe,
I came across one from another vanished friend. Although I have neither made
“Luisette’s Biscuits” nor seen the author in some time, when
I see her name I clearly remember her sweet face and the nice times we had.
In my life many friends have come and gone, their places filled by others who
in turn may either remain or take their leave. Now when I am with someone I
try to take as much pleasure as I can in the time we share. There is no telling
what will happen in the future--either to us or to our friendship. As the Internet
saying goes, there are reasons and seasons for relationships and who knows how
it all turns out.
Regrets are in vain. The past cannot be changed. What I do have control over
is my attitude toward whatever has happened. I can resent it or I can rejoice
over it. The choice is always mine. As I shook up the dressing I felt grateful,
not only for the recipe but also for all the time my friend and I shared. As
I put the bottle away I sent her a blessing. While I miss her, I also cherish
and give thanks for what was.
May your memories of the past contain much that is happy and joyous.
Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert
