Cancer is a thief. It steals time. Our days are already short with worry. Then comes this relentless disease, unfair as a hailstorm at harvest time. But cancer also has the power to transform us, for good. We learn to simplify, appreciating what we have instead of lamenting what we don't. Cancer even made me a better father. My work had made me a stranger to my three kids. But now I pay attention to what really matters. This is not a race. This is anew way of life and a new way of seeing, all from one malicious lump.

In the end each of us has so little time. We have less of it than we can possible imagine. And even though it turns out that Kathy's cancer has not spread, and her prognosis is good, we try to make it all count now, appreciating every part of every day.

I've picked up my camera again. I watch the sky searching for beautiful light. When winter storms come, Kathy and I gather our children and take time to catch snowflakes on our tongues. After all, this is the good stuff. This is what we're living for.

Invitation

Oh do you have time
to linger
for just a little while
out of your busy

and very important day
for the goldfinches
that have gathered
in a field of thistles

for a musical battle,
to see who can sing
the highest note,
or the lowest,

or the most expressive of mirth,
or the most tender?
Their strong, blunt beaks
drink the air

as they strive
melodiously
not for your sake
and not for mine

and not for the sake of winning
but for sheer delight and gratitude—
believe us, they say,
it is a serious thing

just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.
I beg of you,

do not walk by
without pausing
to attend to this
rather ridiculous performance.

It could mean something.
It could mean everything.
It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote:
You must change your life.

Mary Oliver, from Red Bird: Poems
published by Beacon Press http://www.beacon.org/

Dear Fellow Travelers,

Cancer stole my dear friend tarin two weeks ago. It was impossibly quick. She was meant to have years left, not weeks.

She was the second of my “adopted” moms to die of cancer this year. With their deaths I become more like a sunflower turned towards the sun, heavy with seeds.

When tarin found out she had weeks instead of years to live, she did a bold and beautiful thing. She asked her friends and family from far away to join her on a vision fast on her beautiful wild land in Worcester Vermont. They came despite reservations, despite little time ever spent in the woods, and little experience in the world of sacred ceremony and ritual. But they came. And Fran, my past vision fast guide and dear friend asked me to support her in leading the council that would hold the weekend of fasting, singing, crying and story telling.

We sat in the circle before the fast. Tarin's daughter tamara and sons, Daniel and Scott along with some old friends. We sent each one off into the sacred space of the fast, into the woods, into their own depths and thoughts and restlessness. My tears came and went like storms over my face as I sat with my own grief.

That night it was in the 30s and rainy, yet over 50 ordinary people from the community came out to sing out into the land for three hours. As I sat in base camp, tending the fire alone I could hear their hauntingly beautiful song travel over the hills. I rocked back and forth in front of the fire.

In the morning the fasters returned, bringing their stories and empty stomachs. We filled them with miso soup and their words rose with the fire's smoke that told of people searching in themselves for meaning, for love, for a sense of themselves beyond what they've experienced in the “real world.” Each had found something profound in their aloneness.

Tarin spoke last. Her words were sparse and spoken with deliberate effort. She said, “I have spent most of my life trying to perfect ceremony and ritual. All the while I have not learned how to love. I have been the most critical of the people closest to me. But last night, when I was supposed to be fasting alone, I slept next to my granddaughter all night long and I consider this a great victory.”

In the end, it was her granddaughter's warmth next to her that mattered most.

She died on the New Moon, May 25th with a smile on her face.

Blessings and love to you,

Annie O’Shaughnessy

Phyllis is a Soul Flares reader who celebrates her love for wild nature through her art. From her artist statement:

Nature recharges my soul, and I hope that both my art and my teaching will help others to see and be open to the beauty of the natural world that surrounds us all. Awareness and appreciation will hopefully lead to the desire to protect, preserve and care for this fragile planet we dwell on!

tarin chaplinGratitude
to tarin chaplin (1941 - 2009)

Last fall I rented a room in tarin chaplin's house. Living with this wildly creative older woman gave energy to the important parts of me: the dancer, the conservationist, the free spirit, the contented solitary woman. She called on me daily to walk my talk. She was loving and she was tough --and she was one of two women in my life whose lap I simply and gratefully rested my head in when I felt overwhelmed. My time with her marked the beginning of a period I like to call my mid-life revival. It began the day I left my last relationship. It had been a tough relationship to end but over the course of two years my partner became more and more controlling, to the point of being obsessive.  Three months after he told me he didn't want me to spend time in my room alone and would not compromise on that, I was sitting by a waterfall with tarin, preparing a little ceremony that would mark the end of that relationship and the beginning of me reclaiming my life. She did this for me in a magical way -- as she had facilitated many ceremonies and rituals for many over the years.

Words do not do justice to my dear friend and soul sister tarin. Visit here for a few photos and a tribute written by her daughter and a remarkable young woman who was by her side for most of her last few days.
